 French in Key Stage 3

Students learn through a range of fun activities such as games, puzzles, songs, computers and interactive software. They also listen to spoken French on recordings and read authentic French materials. However, students are also expected to do written work and to learn by heart and can, therefore, expect regular learning homework. The language is learnt through practising the four basic skills in different contexts.

The four basic skills are:

  • Listening
Understanding French which is heard either on a recording or spoken by the teacher

  • Speaking
    Speaking French with accurate pronunciation

  • Reading
Understanding a variety of written French

  • Writing
Writing French accurately using a range of constructions

Students also practise more general skills such as working independently, with a partner or in a group, using reference materials and learning to assess their performance and set targets

Key Stage 3 forms the foundation for the GCSE examination in Y11
